Chennai, December 7, 2023: Severe cyclone Michaung, pronounced “migjaum,” made landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast near Bapatla district between 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm, accompanied by gales reaching speeds of 90–100 kilometres per hour, according to an official from the Amaravati Meteorological Centre. The impact of the weather system has been widespread, bringing heavy rainfall to various areas in Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu over the past few hours.

Tragically, a dozen people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents caused by Cyclone Michaung in and around Chennai. Rescue operations, involving personnel on fishing boats and farm tractors, were initiated on Tuesday to evacuate stranded individuals.

Agromet advisories have been issued for Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Odisha due to the prevailing situation brought about by Cyclone Michaung. To address the impact, 29 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed along the Andhra coast.

Chennai, in particular, faced severe consequences as heavy rainfall, influenced by Cyclone Michaung, transformed roads into rivers and swept away vehicles. Additionally, waterlogging occurred at metro stations. Transportation services were significantly impacted, with numerous train and flight cancellations. The Chennai airport runway was flooded, causing chaos and inconvenience to passengers, as no flights were available until 9 am on Tuesday.

Raja Babu, the District Collector of Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district, assured that all preventive measures were taken to minimize loss of life and property in Krishna district, particularly in Machilipatnam. A total of 57 relief camps were set up in seven coastal mandals, and residents from low-lying areas were relocated to these camps. The relief camps were stocked with essential supplies such as food, medicines, and accommodation. Financial assistance, in accordance with government orders, will be provided to those seeking shelter, with Rs 1,000 allocated for individuals and Rs 2,000 for families.
