ACTIVITY 1

Rearrange the following sentences:

(i) Each of us would discover a new place. [ 4 ]

(ii) The hammer was found. [ 1 ]

(iii) He fell on to the piano. [ 5 ]

(iv) Everyone has to get up on the chair beside him. [ 3 ]

(v) Uncle Podger would lose sight of the mark. [ 2 ]

ACTIVITY 2

Answer the following questions:

(a) Why was it necessary for each of them to get up on the chair beside him?

Ans: It was necessary for each of them to get up on the chair beside him to find the mark that uncle Podger had made on the wall, where the nail was to go in.

(b) Why did Uncle consider each of them to be fools?

Ans: Uncle considered each of them to be fools because they would discover the mark in a new place.

(c) How did Uncle Podger fall on the piano?

Ans: Trying to reach a point three inches beyond what was possible for him to reach, the string would slip and Uncle Podger fell on to the piano.

Underline the nominal compounds in the following sentences:

(a) Since it is raining, you should wear the raincoat.

Ans: raincoat = A coat worn to protect the body from rain.

(b) Do you know how to use the washing machine?

Ans: washing machine = a machine used to wash clothes.

(c) Never waste drinking water.

Ans: drinking water = water that is safe to drink

(d) There is not a oil pump in our area.

Ans: oil pump = a pump used to supply oil.

ACTIVITY 4

Write the summary of the given passage:

The constable came. He took me by the hand and pushed me out. My luggage was also taken out. I refused to go to the other compartment and the train steamed away. I went and sat in the waiting room, keeping my hand-bag with me, leaving the other luggage where it was. The railways authorities had taken charge of it.

Ans: The writer missed the train, rejecting the railway authorities' offer to change the compartment. The railway authorities took charge of his baggage.
