Part-1

It was 10 o’ clock in the night.
রাত তখন দশটা ।

Mimi and Raju had not gone to bed yet.
মিমি আর রাজু তখনও শুতে যায় নি।

They wanted to hear a bedtime story from them mother.
তারা তাদের মায়ের থেকে একটি ঘুমপাড়ানি গল্প শুনতে চেয়েছিল।

So Mimi and Roju’s mother lay down with them on the bed.
তাই মিমি ও রাজুর মা তাদের সঙ্গে বিছানায় শুয়ে পড়েছিলেন।

“All right, then, ”mother said, ”/ will tell you a story.
”ঠিক আছে, তাহলে”, মা বললেন, “আমি তোমাদের একটি গল্প বলবো” ।

I heard this from my mother when I was your age.
আমি এটা আমার মায়ের থেকে শুনেছি যখন আমি তোমাদের বয়সী ছিলাম।

‘What is the story all about?” Mimi and Raju asked, all excited.
“গল্পটা কি নিয়ে?”, মিমি এবং রাজু দারুণ উত্তেজিত হয়ে জিজ্ঞেস করেছিল ।ড)

“It’s about the sky,” mother said, smiling, ”Do you want to hear it?”
“এটা আকাশ নিয়ে”, হাসতে হাসতে মা বলেছিলেন, “তোমরা কি শুনতে চাও?”

Oh yes!” they said.
তারা বলেছিল, “ও হ্যাঁ !”

Mother began the tale.
মা গল্পটি শুরু করেছিলেন।

Long ago, everybody could touch the Sky.
অনেককাল আগে সবাই/সকলে আকাশ ছুঁতে পারত ।

The Sky stretched like an umbrella over the Earth.
পৃথিবীর উপরে আকাশটা একটা ছাতার মতো প্রসারিত ছিল/ বিছিয়ে ছিল ।

He played with little children.
সে ছোট ছোট ছেলে মেয়েদের সাথে খেলতো ।

They threw balls at him.
তারা বল ছুঁড়ত তার দিকে।

He threw the balls back.
সে বলগুলি ছুঁড়ে তাদের ফেরত দিত।

The Sky and the children laughed together in happiness.
আকাশ আর শিশুরা আনন্দে একসাথে হাসাহাসি করত।

The Sky was very close to the Earth.
আকাশটা ছিল পৃথিবীর খুব কাছেই।

Part-2

In those days, there lived an old woman.
সেইসব দিনে এক বৃদ্ধা বাস করত ।

She was the oldest woman in the village.
সে গ্রামের মধ্যে সবচেয়ে বয়স্কা মহিলা ছিল।

She lived in a little mud hut.
সে ছোট্ট একটি মটির কুঁড়ে ঘরে বাস করত।

Her hut was beside a paddy field.
তার কুঁড়েঘর একটি ধানক্ষেতের পাশে ছিল।

There were coconut trees at a distance.
একটু দূরে কিছু নারকেল গাছ ছিল ।

She had very little work to do.
তার কাজকর্ম ছিল খুবই কম ।

She had nowhere to go.
তার কোথাও যাওয়ার ছিল না ।

So all day long, she cleaned her hut.
ফলে সারাদিন ধরে সে তার কুঁড়েঘর পরিষ্কার করত।

One hot summer day, there was dust everywhere.
এক উষ্ণ গ্রীষ্মের দিনে চারিদিক ধূলোয় ভরে গিয়েছিল।

People were coughing and sneezing with the dust.
লোকেরা ধূলোর জন্য কাশছিল আর হাঁচছিল।

Even the Sky coughed and sneezed.
এমনকি আকাশ কেশেছিল এবং হেঁচেছিল।

The old woman’s hut was also covered with dust.
বৃদ্ধা মহিলাটির কুঁড়েঘর ও ধুলোয় ঢাকা পড়ে গিয়েছিল।

She swept and swept the little hut.
সে তার ছোট্ট কুঁড়ে ঘরটি ঝাঁট দিয়েই চলেছিল।

She swept the inside of her hut.
সে তার কুঁড়েঘরের ভিতরটা ঝাঁট দিচ্ছিল।

She swept the outside of her hut.
সে তার কুঁড়েঘরের বাইরেটা ঝাঁট দিচ্ছিল।

Dust rose all around her in brown clouds.
তার চারপাশে ধুলো বাদামি মেঘের মত হয়ে উঠল ।

The Sky could not breathe easily.
আকাশ সহজে নিঃশ্বাস নিতে পারছিল না।

The dust got into his nose and made him sneeze.
তার নাকের মধ্যে ধূলো ঢুকলো এবং তার হাঁচির উদ্রেক ঘটালো ।

The sneeze shook the world with its loud sound.
তার হাঁচির উচ্চশব্দে পৃথিবী কেঁপে উঠলো।

The sneeze of the Sky was thunder.
আকাশের হাঁচি ছিল বজ্রধ্বনি।

People covered their heads and ran indoors in fear.
লোকেরা তাদের মাথা ঢাকা দিল এবং ভয়ে ঘরের ভেতর দৌড়ে গেল।

But the old woman kept on sweeping with her broom.
কিন্তু বৃদ্ধ মহিলাটি তার ঝাঁটা দিয়ে ঝাঁট দেওয়া চালিয়ে গেল।

The dust from her broom got into the sky’s eyes and made them water.
তার ঝাঁটা থেকে ধূলো গিয়ে আকাশের চোখে ঢুকলো এবং সেগুলিকে জলে ভর্তি করলো ।

The water fell as drops of rain.
সেই জল বৃষ্টির ফোঁটার মতো পড়লে হয়ে পড়ল।

Raindrops fell on to the areas she had just swept.
যে জায়গাগুলিতে সে সবে ঝাঁট দিয়েছে সেখানে বৃষ্টির ফোঁটা পড়লো।

Part-3

The old woman looked angrily at the Sky.
বৃদ্ধা মহিলাটি রাগে / ক্রুদ্ধ হয়ে আকাশের দিকে তাকালো।

“Stop raining at once,” she ordered.
সে আদেশ দিল, “এক্ষুনি বৃষ্টি থামাও”।

The Sky could not stop raining.
আকাশ বৃষ্টি থামাতে পারল না।

His eyes were full of dust with all her sweeping.
তার চোখ দুটি জলে ভরে ছিল বৃদ্ধা ঝাঁট দেওয়া ধূলোর জন্য ।

She picked up her broom, and started to sweep.
সে তার ঝাঁটা তুলে নিয়েছিল এবং ঝাঁট দিতে শুরু করলো।

She swept harder and harder.
সে আরো জোরে আরো জোরে ঝাঁট দিতে লাগলো।

More and more dust flew up.
আরো বেশি বেশি ধূলো উড়তে লাগল।

The Sky jumped out of her way.
আকাশ তার রাস্তা থেকে লাফিয়ে উঠল।

He tried to avoid the dust “Please, stop sweeping,” he pleaded.
সে ধুলো এড়িয়ে যাওয়ার চেষ্টা করলো আর মিনতি করে বলল, “ দয়া করে ঝাঁট দেওয়া থামাও”।

The old woman did not listen to his request.
বৃদ্ধা মহিলাটি তার অনুরোধ শুনলো না।

She kept on sweeping.
সে তার ঝাঁট দেওয়া চালিয়ে গেল।

She wanted to keep her hut clean.
সে তার ঘরটা পরিষ্কার রাখতে চাই ছিল।

The Sky could take it no more.
সে হাঁচলো আর কাশলো ।

He sneezed and coughed.
সে বজ্রধ্বনি করল এবং বৃষ্টি ঘাটালো।

He thundered and rained.
অবশেষে আকাশ উপরের দিকে উঠে গেল।

At last, the Sky flew up.
অবশেষে আকাশ উপরের দিকে উঠে গেল ।

He flew out of reach of the old woman’s broom.
সে বৃদ্ধা মহিলাটির ঝাঁটার নাগালের বাইরে উড়ে গেল । (reach-রিচ)

The Sky never came down again.
আকাশ কখনো আর নিচে নেমে এলো না ।

But the Sky is still a friend to little children.
কিন্তু আকাশ এখনো ছোটছোট ছেলে মেয়েদের বন্ধু ।

From a distance, he watches them play and smiles happily.
সে দূর থেকে তাদের খেলতে দেখে আর আনন্দে হাসে।
