Class 12 Asleep In The Valley Bengali Meaning, Explanation, Summary

Asleep in the valley

Arthur Rimbaud

A small green valley where a slow stream flows

And leaves long strands of silver on the bright grass;

এবং উজ্জ্বল ঘাসের উপর দীর্ঘ রুপোলি রেখা ছেড়ে যায়;

 from the mountain top stream the Sun’s Rays;

পাহাড়ের শীর্ষ থেকে সূর্যের রশ্মি নেমে আসে;

They fill the hollow full of light.

A soldier, very young, lies open-mouthed,

a pillow made of fern beneath his head, Asleep;

stretched in the heavy undergrowth,

Pale in his warm, green, sun-soaked bed.

His feet among the flowers, he sleeps.

His smile

Is like an infant’s – gentle, without guile.

Ah, Nature, keep him warm; he may catch cold.

The humming insects don’t disturb his rest;

গুঞ্জনরত পোকামাকড় তার বিশ্রামকে বিরক্ত করতে পারছে না;

He sleeps in sunlight, one hand on his breast;

সে সূর্যের আলোতে ঘুমিয়ে, তার এক হাত তার বুকের উপর;

At peace. In his side there are two red holes.

Summary of the Poem “Asleep in the Valley”

The poem begins by describing a peaceful, green valley with a slow-flowing stream and sunlight filling the hollow. The valley is calm, with bright grass and silver strands left by the stream. The beauty of the scene is serene, as the sun’s rays illuminate the area.

In the second stanza, the poet describes a young soldier lying asleep in the valley. He rests with his mouth open, his head on a pillow made of fern, and the soft undergrowth as his bed. The sun-soaked green bed gives a sense of warmth, but the soldier appears pale, hinting at his lifeless state.

The third stanza adds a delicate touch to the soldier’s surroundings, as he lies with a smile on his face, resembling that of an innocent child. The poet asks nature to keep the soldier warm and shield him from the cold. The humming of insects among the flowers does not disturb his peaceful sleep. However, the last two lines reveal the tragic truth: the soldier is not truly asleep but dead, as evidenced by the two red holes in his side, indicating he has been shot. The poem reflects on the horror of war, the futility of violence, and the sorrow of death.
