There was once a lad who wanted to be a sailor but his mother would not let him go to the sea.
একবার এক বালক ছিল যে নাবিক হতে চেয়েছিল, কিন্তু তার মা তাকে সমুদ্রে যেতে দেননি।
“Child, what do you know of sailing?” she would say.
“বাছা , তুমি সমুদ্রযাত্রা সম্পর্কে কি জানো?”, তিনি বলতেন।
“You’re a farmer’s son, you know the turn of the seasons and the smell of the soil but you do not know the sea.”
“তুমি কৃষকের ছেলে, তুমি ঋতুপরিবর্তন, মাটির গন্ধ এইসব জানো, কিন্তু সমুদ্র সম্পর্কে জানো না।”
Now the boy whose name was Jon, had always obeyed his mother.
এখন ছেলেটি যার নাম ছিল জন, সে সর্বদা তার মায়ের কথা মানত।
So he went about his farm work with a heavy heart but did not again mention the sea.

One day, he had been walking behind the plough.

He all but ran over a tiny green turtle on a clod of dirt.
সে প্রায় একটি মাটির চেলায় থাকা একটি ছোট্ট সবুজ কচ্ছপের উপর দিয়ে চলে যাচ্ছিল।
He picked the turtle up and set it on his head where he knew it would be safe.
সে কচ্ছপটিকে তুলে তার মাথার উপর নিরাপদে রাখল।
When he was done with ploughing, Jon plucked the turtle from his head.
চাষের কাজ শেষ করে, জন কচ্ছপটিকে তার মাথা থেকে নামিয়ে নিল।
To his utter surprise he found that it had turned into a tiny green fairy man that stood upon his palm and bowed.
সম্পূর্ণ বিস্ময়ের সাথে সে দেখতে পেল যে এটি একটি ক্ষুদ্র সবুজ পরী মানুষে পরিণত হয়েছে যে তার হাতের তালুতে দাঁড়িয়ে নমস্কার করছে।
“I thank you for your kindness, tell me your heart’s desire and I’ll grant it to you for saving my life,” said the fairy.

Jon bowed back but said nothing.
জন ঘুরিয়ে নমস্কার করলো কিন্তু কিছু বলল না।
Although his heart yearned to go out to the sea, he did not express his wish.
যদিও তার হৃদয় সমুদ্রে যেতে চেয়েছিল, কিন্তু সে তার ইচ্ছা প্রকাশ করল না।
The green fairy man could read a heart easily so he said, “I see you wish to go sailing”.
সবুজ পরী মানুষটি সহজেই একজনের মনের কথা বুঝতে পারত তাই সে বলল, “আমি দেখতে পাচ্ছি তুমি সমুদ্রযাত্রায় যেতে চাও”।
Jon’s face answered for him.
জন এর মুখভঙ্গি তার হয়ে উত্তর দিয়ে দিল।

Why do you think Jon thought that the turtle would be safe on his head?
Ans: Since John was ploughing the land, at any moment the turtle would either be hit by the plough or John would accidentally hit it with his foot as it was a tiny turtle. So I think Jon thought that the turtle would be safe on his head.

“Since you put me on your head like a hat to keep me safe, I shall give you a different kind of cap in return, the kind sailors most desire. A cap full of wind. But there’s one warning, no human hand will ever be able to take it off.”
“যেহেতু তুমি আমাকে সুরক্ষিত রাখার জন্য তোমার মাথায় টুপির মতো রেখেছিল, তার বিনিময়ে আমি তোমাকে একটি ভিন্ন ধরণের টুপি দেব, যেটা নাবিকরা সবচেয়ে বেশি চায়। বাতাসে পূর্ণ একটি টুপি। কিন্তু একটা সতর্কবার্তা আছে, কোনো মানুষের হাত কখনোই টুপিটা খুলে নিতে পারবে না।”
Then with a blink, the fairy man disappeared leaving a striped cap behind.
তারপর এক পলকের সাথে, পরী মানুষটি একটি ডোরাকাটা টুপি পিছনে ফেলে অদৃশ্য হয়ে গেল।
Young Jon put the cap on his head and ran home to tell his mother.
যুবক জন মাথায় টুপিটি পরে তার মাকে জানাতে বাড়িতে দৌড়ে গেল।
“No good will come of the wind cap,” she said.
“বাতাস টুপি থেকে ভালো কিছু হবে না,” তিনি বলেছিলেন।
But the lad would have none of her cautions.

The very next day, putting on the sailor’s cap, he ran off to the sea.

Well, the wind cap worked as the fairy had said but that one condition prevailed!
ব্যস, পরী যেমনটি বলেছিল হাওয়া টুপিটি তেমনই কাজ করেছিল তবে সেখানে একটি শর্ত ছিল!
Now that was both bad and good.
এখন ওটি খারাপ এবং ভাল উভয় ছিল।
It was bad because Jon could neither take his cap off before his captain nor at bedtime.

The captain would therefore never part with his prized sailor and let him ashore.

For a year and a day, young Jon did not set foot on land.

They pulled it and twisted it and so the squall became a storm, the mightiest they had ever seen.

When he got to the land, Jon picked up the cap and ran home to his mother and farm.
