Part: 1

Princess September, the daughter of the king of Siam, was very unhappy.
সিয়ামের রাজার মেয়ে, রাজকুমারী সেপ্টেম্বর খুব অসন্তুষ্ট ছিল।

She was weeping alone one day in her own room when she saw a little bird hop in.
একদিন তিনি তার নিজের ঘরে একা কাঁদছিলেন যখন তিনি দেখলেন একটা ছোট পাখি লাফাতে লাফাতে ঘরে প্রবেশ করল।

Then the little bird began to sing.
তারপরে ছোট্ট পাখি গান করতে লাগল।

He sang a beautiful song all about the lake in the king’s garden and the willow trees reflected in the still water.
রাজার বাগানের জলাশয়ের স্থির জলের ওপর উইলো গাছের প্রতিবিম্ব বিষয়ে সে একটা সুন্দর গান গাইল।

When he had finished, the Princess was not crying anymore.
তার গান শেষ হবার পর রাজকুমারী আর কাঁদছিল না।

“That was a very nice song”, she said. “Would you want me to live with you?” said the little bird.
সে বলল, “ওইটি খুব সুন্দর গান ছিল”। ছোট পাখি বলল,”তুমি কি চাও আমি তোমার সঙ্গে থাকি?”

Princess September clapped her hands with delight.
রাজকুমারী সেপ্টেম্বর আনন্দে হাততালি দিল।

Then the little bird hopped on to the end of the bed and sang her to sleep.
তখন ছোট পাখিটি লাফিয়ে বিছানার ধারে গেল এবং তাকে গান গেয়ে ঘুম পারল।

When she awoke the next day the little bird was still sitting there, and as she opened her eyes he said good morning.
পরের দিন সে যখন জাগল ছোট পাখিটি তখনও সেখানে বসেছিল এবং যেই সে চোখ খুলল সে সুপ্রভাত জানাল।

She stretched out the first finger of her right hand so that it served as a perch.
সে তার ডানহাতের তর্জনিতা বাড়াল যাতে সেটা বসার স্থানের কাজ করতে পারে।

The little bird flew down and sat on it.
ছোট পাখি নিচে উড়ে গিয়ে তার ওপর বসল।

Then she went through the palace and called on each of the princesses in turn.
তারপর সে রাজপ্রাসাদের মধ্যে প্রতিটি রাজকুমারীর সঙ্গে সাক্ষাত্কার করল।

And for each of the princesses the little bird sang a different song.
প্রতিটি রাজকুমারীর জন্য ছোট পাখি পৃথক গান গাইল।

The other princesses were jealous and visited September together.
অন্য রাজকুমারীরা হিংসুটে ছিল এবং একত্রে সেপ্টেম্বরের কাছে এল।

“Well, my dear,” they said, “your little bird flies in and out just as he likes.”
তারা বলল, ভালো কথা, প্রিয়া তোমার ছোট পাখি তার ইচ্ছামত ভিতরে বাইরে উড়ে বেড়ায়।

They looked round the room.
তারা ঘরের চারিদিকে তাকিয়ে দেখল।

“Where is your bird now?” they said.
তারা বলল “তোমার পাখি এখন কোথায়?

“He’s gone off to visit his home,” said September.
সেপ্টেম্বর বলল, “সে তার বাড়ি গেছে”।

“And what makes you think he’ll come back?” asked the princesses.
রাজকুমারীরা জিজ্ঞাসা করল “তুমি কি করে ভাবলে সে ফিরে আসবে?”

“He always does come back”, said September.
“সে সবসময় ফিরে আসে”, সেপ্টেম্বর বলল।

“Well, my dear,” said the princesses, “if you take our advice, pop him into the cage and keep him there.”
রাজকুমারীরা বলল, “ভালো প্রিয়া, যদি তুমি আমাদের উপদেশ নাও তাহলে তাকে খাচায় ভরে রাখো।

“But I like to have him fly around the room”, said the Princess.
রাজকুমারী বলল, “আমি পছন্দ করি সে সারা ঘরে উড়ে বেড়াক”।

“Safety first,” said her sisters ominously.
তার বোনেরা সাবধানের ভঙ্গিতে বলল, “নিরাপত্তা সর্বাগ্রে”।

They got up and walked out of the room, shaking their heads, and they left September very uneasy.
তারা মাথা নাড়তে নাড়তে উঠে দাঁড়িয়ে ঘর ছেড়ে গেল এবং সেপ্টেম্বর অসব্স্তিতে পড়ল।

It seemed to her that the little bird was away a long time and she could not think what he was doing.
তার মনে হল যে ছোট পাখি দীর্ঘক্ষণ গেছে এবং সে ভেবে পেল না পাখিটা কি করছে।

He might forget her, or he might take a fancy to someone else!
সে হয়ত তাকে ভুলে গেছে অথবা সে হয়ত অন্য কাউকে পছন্দ করছে।

Part: 2

Suddenly, September heard a tweet-tweet just behind her ear.
হঠাৎ, সেপ্টেম্বর তার কানের ঠিক পিছনে একটি টুইট টুইট শব্দ শুনতে পেল।

The bird had come in quietly.
পাখিটা নিরবে ভিতরে এসেছে।

September felt her heart go thump-thump against her chest, and she made up her mind to take no more risks.
সেপ্টেম্বর অনুভব করল তার হৃৎপিন্ড বুকের কাছে ধক ধক করছে এবং সে মনস্থির করে ফেলল আর কোনো ঝুঁকি নেবে না।

She put up her hand and took hold of the bird.
সে হাত বাড়িয়ে পাখিটাকে ধরল।

The bird was quite used to this, so he suspected nothing.
পাখিটি এটাতে বেশ অভ্যস্ত ছিল, তাই সে কিছুই সন্দেহ করল না।

He was surprised when she carried him to the cage, put him in, and shut the door on him.
সে বিস্মিত হল যখন সে তাকে খাঁচার কাছে নিয়ে গেল, ভিতরের ঢোকাল এবং তার দরজা বন্ধ করে দিল।

He hopped up on the ivory perch and said, “What is wrong?”
সে লাফিয়ে হাতির দাঁতের তৈরি কাঠির উপর বসল এবং বলল, “কি ভুল হল?”

September said, “Some of mamma’s cats are prowling about tonight, and I think you are much safer out here.”

He ate a very good supper and began to sing.

“I don’t know what the matter with me is,” he said, “but I don’t feel like singing tonight.”
“আমি বুঝতে পারছি না আমার কি হল” সে বলল “কিন্তু আজ রাতে আমার গান করতে ইচ্ছা হচ্ছে না।”

“Very well,” said September, “go to sleep instead!”
“খুব ভাল,” সেপ্টেম্বর বলল, “তাহলে তুমি ঘুমাতে যাও!”

So he put his head under his wing and in a minute was fast asleep.

September went to sleep too.

আমি ভালো করে উড়তে চাই যখন শিশিরে মাটি ভিজে থাকে।

“You’re much better off where you are,” said September.
“তুমি যেখানে আছো সেখান অনেক ভালো আছো,”সেপ্টেম্বরে বলেল।

“You have a beautiful golden cage!”
তোমার একটি সুন্দর সোনার খাঁচা আছে!”

“Let me out, let me out,” said the little bird.
“আমাকে বেরোতে দাও, আমাকে বেরোতে দাও” ছোট্ট পাখিটি বলল।

“You’ll have three meals a day.
“তুমি দিনে তিনবার খাবার পাবে।

You’ll have nothing to worry you from morning till night, and you can sing to your heart’s content.”
সকাল থেকে রাত পর্যন্ত কোনো বিষয়ে তোমাকে চিন্তা করতে হবে না এবং তুমি প্রাণভরে গান গাইতে পারবে।”

The little bird tried to slip through the bars of the cage, but he couldn’t.
ছোট্ট পাখিটি খাঁচার গারদগুলির ফাঁক দিয়ে পিছলে বেরোনোর চেষ্টা করল, কিন্তু সে পারল না।

He beat against the door but of course, he couldn’t open it.
সে দরজার ধাক্কা মারতে লাগল কিন্তু অবশ্যই সে এটি খুলতে পারল না।

He began to cry again: “Let me out, let me out!”
সে আবার চিত্‍কার করতে লাগল: “আমাকে বের করে দাও, আমাকে বের করে দাও!”

“I’ve only put you in the cage because I’m so fond of you”, said Princess September.
রাজকুমারী সেপ্টেম্বর বলল “আমি তোমাকে খাঁচায় রেখেছি কারণ আমি তোমায় খুব পছন্দ করি।”

But the little bird stood in the corner of his cage, looking out at the blue sky, and never sang a note.
কিন্তু ছোট্ট পাখিটি তার খাঁচার কোণায় দাঁড়িয়ে নীল আকাশের দিকে তাকিয়ে রইল, আর কখনও গান গাইল না।

“Why don’t you sing and forget your troubles?” said September.
“তুমি গান গেয়ে তোমার কষ্টগুলি ভুলে যাও না?” সেপ্টেম্বর বলল।

“How can I sing?” answered the bird.
“আমি কীভাবে গান গাইব?” পাখিটি উত্তর দিল।

“I want to see the trees and the lake and the green rice growing in the fields.”
“আমি গাছ ও হ্রদ এবং জমিতে সবুজ ধানের বেড়ে ওঠা দেখতে চাই।”

“If that’s all you want, I’ll take you for a walk,” said September.
“যদি তুমি সেটাই চাও, তাহলে আমি তোমাকে হাঁটতে হাঁটতে ঘুরিয়ে নিয়ে আসব,” সেপ্টেম্বরে বলল।

Activity 4

Complete the following sentences with information from the text:

(a) The little bird was surprised when September carried him to the cage and put him in and shut the door on him.

(b) At dawn, the little bird wished to be let out from the cage because he wanted to have a good fly while the dew is still wet on the ground.

(c) Princess September told the bird he was better off in the cage because he would have three meals a day and he would have nothing to worry from morning till night.

(d) The bird told the Princess that it could not sing as he wanted to see the trees and the lake and the rice growing in the fields.

Activity 5

Answer the following questions:

(a) ‘So he suspected nothing’. Who is ‘he’? Why did he not suspect anything?

Ans: ‘He’ is the little bird.He did not suspect anything because the bird was quite used to Princess September’s holding him like this.

(b) Why did the little bird stop in the middle of his song?

Ans: The little bird stopped in the middle of his song because he didn’t like singing in the cage.

Ans: The little bird tried to free himself from the cage by slipping through the bars of the cage. Besides this he also beat against the door of the cage to open it.
