1. Where did Lencho live?
Ans: Lencho lived in a house which was situated at the top of a low hill. His house was only one in the entire valley.

2. What did he hope for?
Ans: He hoped for a shower of rain.

3. What did he say about the raindrops?
Ans: He said that the raindrops were like new coins. The big drops were ten cent pieces and the little ones were fives.

4. How did the rain change?
Ans: A strong wind began to blow and along with the rain very large hailstones began to fall. Thus the rain changed.

5. What happened to Lencho’s corn fields?
Ans: Lencho’s corn fields were completely ruined by the hailstorm.

6. Who did Lencho have faith in?
Ans: Lencho had faith in God.

7. Who did he write a letter to?
Ans: He wrote a letter to God.

8. Who read the letter?
Ans: The postmaster read the letter.

9. What did the postmaster do?
Ans: The postmaster collected some money and addressed it to Lencho in an envelope.

10. Was Lencho surprised to find a letter for him with money in it?
Ans: No, Lencho was not surprised, because he had deep faith in god.

11. What was Lencho’s reaction after getting the letter?
Ans: Lencho was not surprised when he received the letter. When he counted the money he became angry, because the amount was less than he had requested. He thought that god could not have done a mistake. The post office employees must have cheated him.

(i) Why did Lencho keep on looking at the sky throughout the morning?
Ans: Lencho kept looking at the sky throughout the morning because he was eagerly waiting for rain as his crops were in need of it. He was hoping for a good harvest and believed that rain was the only way to save his crops.

(ii) Why was the field white after the storm?
Ans: The field was covered in a thick layer of hailstones that fell during the storm. The hailstones destroyed the crops completely, making the whole field look white.

(iii) Why did Lencho say the raindrops were like ‘new coins’?
Ans: Lencho said the raindrops were like ‘new coins’ because he was happy and grateful for the rain that fell on his parched land. The rain was a symbol of hope for him, and he saw the raindrops as a gift from God, which would bring prosperity and a good harvest. The simile of ‘new coins’ was used to convey the idea that the rain was a valuable and precious gift, just like new coins.

(iv) Why did Lencho prefer locusts to the storm?
Ans: Lencho preferred locusts to the storm because he thought that locusts would not have destroyed all his crops like the hailstorm did. He believed that the locusts would have eaten only a part of the crop and left the rest, giving him some hope for a good harvest. Therefore, he considered the locusts to be a lesser evil compared to the hailstorm.

(v) Did Lencho try to find out who had sent the money to him? Why / Why not?
Ans: Lencho did not try to find out who had sent the money to him.
Because he believed that only God could have sent such an amount and had even addressed the letter to God. He had ample confidence on god.

(i) Who does Lencho have complete faith in?
Ans: Lencho has complete faith in god.

(ii) ‘Lencho was an ox of a man’. What does the line mean?
Ans: The line means that Lencho was very labourious.

(iii) What was the postmaster like?
Ans: The postmaster was an amiable person. he had a plump body.

(iv) Why did the postmaster send money to Lencho?
Ans: The postmaster was surprised at Lencho’s faith in god. So in order not to shake Lencho’s faith, he sent money to him.

(v) What does the expression ‘an act of charity’ mean?
Ans: An act of charity means the act of giving money or help to people who are in need.
