E. Let’s Understand the text.
Q1. Where did Lencho live?
Ans: Lencho lived in a house which was situated at the top of a low hill. His house was only one in the entire valley.
Q2. What did he hope for?
Ans: He hoped for a shower of rain.
Q3. What did he say about the raindrops?
Ans: He said that the raindrops were like new coins. The big drops were ten cent pieces and the little ones were fives.
Q4. How did the rain change?
Ans: A strong wind began to blow and along with the rain very large hailstones began to fall. Thus the rain changed.
Q5. What happened to Lencho’s corn fields?
Ans: Lencho’s corn fields were completely ruined by the hailstorm.
Q6. Who did Lencho have faith in?
Ans: Lencho had faith in God.
Q7. Who did he write a letter to?
Ans: He wrote a letter to God.
Q8. Who read the letter?
Ans: The postmaster read the letter.
Q9. What did the postmaster do?
Ans: The postmaster collected some money and addressed it to Lencho in an envelope.
Q10. Was Lencho surprised to find a letter for him with money in it?
Ans: No, Lencho was not surprised, because he had deep faith in god.
Q11. What was Lencho’s reaction after getting the letter?
Ans: Lencho was not surprised when he received the letter. When he counted the money became angry, because the amount was less than he had requested. He thought that god could not have done a mistake. The post office employees must have cheated him.
F. Let’s read between the lines:
(a) (i) Why did Lencho keep on looking at the sky throughout the morning?
Ans: A shower of rain was very necessary for Lencho’s corn field. So wishing a heavy downpour, he kept on looking at the sky throughout the morning, as there were signs of rain in the sky.
(ii) Why was the field white after the storm?
Ans: After the storm, the field was completely covered with hailstones. So it was white after the storm.
(iii) Why did Lencho say the raindrops were like ‘new coins’?
Ans: Lenncho’s field needed a shower of rain for a good harvest. He was anxiously waiting for it. When it began to rain, he became overwhelmed. Because he was sure that he is going to get a good harvest which will fetch him much money. So, out of joy he considered the raindrops with new coins.
(iv) Why did Lencho prefer locusts to the storm?
Ans: The storm had completely ruined the cornfield. The field was covered with hailstones and there was no sign of crops. Though locusts destroy the crops, they never ruin the field in such a manner. So, Lencho prefered locusts to the storm.
(v) Did Lencho try to find out who had sent the money to him? Why / why not?
Ans: No, Lencho did not try to find out who had sent the money to him. Because he had ample confidence on god and he was sure that god had sent him the money.
(b) Read the passage from the text and answer the questions that follow:

Ans: Lencho has complete faith in god.
(ii) ‘Lencho was an ox of a man’ -what does the line mean?
Ans: Lencho was an ox of a man’ the line means that Lencho was very labourious.
(iii) What was the postmaster like?
Ans: The postmaster was an amiable person. He had a plumb body.
(iv) Why did the postmaster send money to Lencho?
Ans: The postmaster was surprised at Lencho’s faith in god. So inn order not to shake Lencho’s faith, he sent money to him.
(v) What does the expression ‘an act of charity’ mean?
Ans: An act of charity means the act of giving money or help to people to people who are in need.
