Tragedy Strikes as Earthquake Claims 157 Lives in Western Nepal

—- By a Staff Reporter

Kathmandu, 4th November, 2023: A devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 shook western Nepal late on Friday, leaving at least 157 people dead and 190 others injured. The epicenter of the earthquake was in Ramidanda, Jajarkot district, approximately 550 kilometers from Kathmandu, and its effects rippled across borders, with tremors being felt as far as New Delhi and parts of northern India.
The worst-hit areas were the two districts of Jajarkot and Rukum West, where the earthquake claimed the lives of 105 and 52 people, respectively. The disaster marks Nepal’s deadliest earthquake since 2015, when two powerful quakes took around 8,000 lives.
Rescue efforts were hampered by blocked roads due to landslides, delaying the response time for search and rescue teams. The Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, and local police are jointly leading the efforts to save lives and provide medical assistance.
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, commonly known as Prachanda, personally visited the affected areas to oversee the rescue and relief operations. The government has allocated Rs 5 crore to each of the severely impacted districts, Jajarkot and Rukum West. With the threat of aftershocks continuing, the people of Nepal are facing a challenging period of recovery.
